Walking in the Scottish Borders
Bill and Alison are both highly experienced hillwalkers who have walked and climbed in Scotland and overseas for over 40 years. We can help you plan both short, relaxing – or more strenuous - walking trips, provide maps, and advise on routes, likely conditions and times.
Glede Knowe is ideally situated for access to the best of walking in the Borders from gentle strolls in the forests of nearby Glen Tress to long, more challenging days in the surrounding hills.
RAMBLES AND EASY WALKING
The Tweed Valley Forest Park which includes nearby Glentress, Cardrona, Thornilee and Yair, all have considerable networks of well maintained footpaths and trails. Most of these are easy, waymarked walking.
The Tweed and Neidpath Castle walk, near Peebles, provides a gentle five mile ramble, or a more strenuous but short route is the Upper Yarrow Valley Walk, starting at Tibbie Shiels Inn on St Mary’s Loch and the on to the round of Loch of the Lowes. There is also delightful easy walking in the glen of the Holm Water, near Broughton, where you can enjoy a gentle stroll and picnic by the river.
MORE STRENUOUS WALKS
The John Buchan Way, which runs from Peebles to Broughton, is way marked in both directions, and was opened in spring 2003. It is named after the writer of 'The Thirty-Nine Steps' and diplomat John Buchan (1875-1940), who was very connected to the borders area.
The route is 13 miles long and mainly follows long established hill tracks through the Peeblesshire countryside. It has three main ascents and descents giving a total ascent of 800 metres, but it is not particularly steep and the views are well worth the effort.
The ascent of Lee Penn also offers some great views. The route starts at the Bike Shop on Innerleithen High Street and although the journey from here to the top of Lee Pen is all uphill, the views from the top overlooking the valley towards Walkerburn are superb. Looking south east you will see the Minchmoor, another walk with great views. The walk over Lee Penn can take you to either Peebles or back down Falla Brae to Glenn Tress car park, and the Hub coffee shop, a well deserved stopping place!
The hotel has a good drying room, equipment store and laundry service and we can provide early/late meals to suit your itinerary and packed lunches to complete your day.
